Where to eat vegan in Faro? Vegan pastel de nata, local specialties & more

Want to find out where to grab a vegan pastel de nata in Faro or which vegan-friendly restaurants are worth a visit? Here are my personal recommendations after spending a few days in Faro. I’ve also included a bonus recommendation in Albufeira!

Where to eat vegan in Faro

I have personally been to these places, this is fully based on my own experience.

Outro Lado

Outro Lado is a fully vegan restaurant specialising in “veganised” traditional Portuguese recipes, which are mostly fish-based.

So what do you get when you order the “Algarve Fish Stew” there? A tofu & seaweed-based version served with potatoes, vegetables and shimeji mushrooms marinated in a richly flavoured broth.

Whilst I enjoyed the dish, the tofu was pretty much raw and I wished it had been cooked a little further. I had some room for dessert, so I ordered the cheesecake which turned out to be one of the “food highlights” of my Algarve trip. It was beautifully presented and tasted absolutely incredible. If it’s available when you visit this restaurant, you must try it!

I’d recommend booking in advance event a table for one or two. The people who hadn’t were turned away on the night I went there, the place was full.

Vegan Box

Vegan Box is a tiny, almost hidden spot but it’s a must-visit place for those who want to try the traditional Portugueses cakes & pastries, such as the pastel de Nata or the “chocolate salami”.

They also have savoury items ready to go, perfect for a quick lunch break (you won’t be able to sit inside, it’s really a shoe box!) or to satisfy your sweet tooth.

The menu also includes vegan burgers and wraps made to order.

Papaya

I stumbled across Papaya whilst looking for a place with wifi before I could check into my accommodation. It’s a great spot if you fancy a juice, smoothie or a quick lunch such as a wrap or sandwich.

They don’t have many vegan options, but I the acai bowl smoothie on the menu tickled my fancy. It was really refreshing and quite tasty. My soya latte was good too, and everything was reasonably priced.

O Coreto

Located by the marina, O Coreto is a prime location to enjoy the sunset whilst having drinks or dinner. They don’t have many vegan/veggie options on the menu, but the food is good, service is fairly speedy and they even have live music in the evening.

I hadn’t planned on dining there, but I really wanted to watch the sunset and spotted a free table at this restaurant, so I thought it was fate. I ordered a virgin mojito and the linguine dish with roasted vegetables, which I both recommend.

True Food

True Food is fully gluten-free and most dishes are vegan. They offer a variety of options, from pizzas to burgers and ravioli. I’d suggest looking at the photos on the Google reviews before going there, so you know what to expect as the pizzas don’t look like “traditional” pizzas and the burgers are bunless, to name of few examples.

I ordered a ravioli dish which I ended up waiting 50 minutes for. I knew that it was all home made and could tell that it was a small team, but I was not told that the wait would be this long and the restaurant was not even full.

After 35 minutes I went inside (I was sat outside) to double-check that they hadn’t forgotten my order, and the owner was actually quite rude.

The food was good, but underwhelming considering the wait. Comparatively, I enjoyed the tiramisu I had for dessert much more than my main, and it was already made so there was no wait.

Gula FoodLab

Ice cream lovers, don’t miss out on Gula’s delicious sorbets! I wish they had some vegan ice cream options, but their sorbet flavours especially mango are delicious nonetheless.

My vegan food spot recommendation in Albufeira

Although not in Faro, I had to include Sugar Rabbit in my vegan-friendly recommendations! If you visit Albufeira, I’d highly recommend stopping there. The coffee is great, so is the food (fully vegan menu) and the staff is very friendly.

I spent a day in Albufeira and started my day with vegan pancakes at this place, paired with a freshly squeezed orange juice and an oat flat white.

The pancakes were delicious and really filling. They came with a scoop of mango sorbet, which was a little surprising for breakfast but also rather refreshing!

I enjoyed it so much that I came back a few hours later for a quick lunch. I got the beetroot hummus toast with an iced oat latte. Very tasty, although I should have opted for a more substantial option, the piece of toast was rather small.

But, bonus points for the water vapour jets on the terrace to keep us cool, which was awesome as at this point it was pretty warm!
