What is the best day trip from Faro? Algar Seco & Benagil Cave guided tour from Faro

Want to take a day trip from Faro? Why not book a guided tour and visit not one or two, but three breathtaking locations? Discover Algar Seco, Benagil Cave and Marinha Beach on an awesome guided day trip from Faro.

Why should you book a guided tour?

When I travel somewhere I’ve never been to before, I love booking at least one guided tour and here are a few reasons why:

  • It’s convenient and time-saving: guided tours often include transportation, minimising the hassle of planning and logistics. They’re well-structured, allowing you to see more in a limited time, which is great if your trip is short.

  • You meet like-minded people: chances are, you’ll take a tour with travellers who share similar interests and if you’re solo travelling, it’s a great way to not spend every single day on your own.

  • It’s safe: Guides can navigate unfamiliar terrain and provide assistance. I wouldn’t go on certain hikes or do certain activities on my own, but I’d absolutely do them with a group led by a knowledgable guide.

  • It’s less stressful: Whilst I love planning, sometimes coordinating transportation, tickets and other bits of logistics takes the pleasure out of the experience. It can be much more enjoyable to book a day trip and relax without the stress of managing details.

From Faro: Algar Seco, Benagil Cave and Marinha Beach tour

I booked this guided tour departing from Faro as it seemed to be the most complete one, covering 3 different locations. I was only in the Algarve for 2 and a half days, and I wanted to see as much as possible!

Pick up & timings

The meet up point by the port was very easy to find, and we were asked to be there by 9:45am for departure at 10am. The tour lasted just a little over 5 hours and we were dropped off at the same location around 15:20.

Itinerary

We first drove to Algar Seco which took about 50 minutes. Algar Seco is one of the most breaktaking places I’ve ever seen and the photos don’t do it justice. I

It consists of a series of stunning sea caves, grottoes, and rock formations carved into the cliffs by centuries of coastal erosion.

It’s only an 800m walk, but we were there for well over an hour, as it’s quite narrow and strenuous. Plus, we stopped several times to take in the views and take a lot of photos. Algar Seco is absolutely worth visiting.

We then got back on the minibus for a short drive to the next stop: Benagil Caves. These renowned sea caves are stunning, honeycomb-like formations with the most famous being the "Algar de Benagil.

Unfortunately at the time I took the tour, the regulations had just changed and we were no longer able to go inside the caves. I don’t know if this was temporary or permanent, but admiring the caves from above was still an incredible experience!

And to be honest I’m not sure I would have enjoyed going inside the caves, it used to be very crowded.

We then drove to the third location: Marinha Beach which offers some postcard-like views of the Algarve coast. We had 90 minutes of free time there and could either walk on the trail, relax at the beach or get some food.

The weather wasn’t the best so I didn’t get a chance to go in the sea, but I’d highly recommend taking your swimwear with you if you’re booking this tour during the Summer!

And then, it was time to get back in the minibus for the drive back to Faro.

Would I recommend this tour?

Absolutely! Here’s what I enjoyed the most, other than the breaktaking views across the 3 sites:

  • We were a small group of only 7 tourists including some other solo travellers, from several countries.

  • We were absolutely not rushed around and the guide was even offering to take photos of everyone, recommending the most scenic backdrops.

  • We learnt the key information but this tour was not a history lesson, it was more about enjoying the views and exploring places we wouldn’t have discovered that easily on our own.

Plus, it was only £45 for the day I booked it!

If you’re in Faro and are looking for more tours and activities, you’ll be spoilt for choice on Get Your Guide!
