Is Bondi Sands sunscreen actually vegan? Misleading information.

I ordered some Bondi Sands sunscreen lotions which were described as vegan. But were they?

Is Bondi Sands sunscreen range vegan?

Bondi Sands is a fully cruelty-free brand certified by PETA and customers can be led to believe that their whole range is vegan, which is not true (yet).

Many of Bondi Sands products are vegan, such as the best-selling Pure Gradual Self Tanning Milk and Liquid Gold Self Tanning Foam.

But as of now, it appears that their sunscreen range is not vegan, however customers can easily be fooled by a lack of transparency.

I was fooled and bought the Bondi Sands SPF 50+ Fragrance Free Body Sunscreen Lotion (the 500ml pump value pack and the 150ml tube) that was marketed as vegan, only to discover that they actually contain Beeswax.

How is Bondi Sands misleading their customers?

Here is how I was made to believe that the Bondi Sands SPF products I was buying (in May 2023) were vegan. At the time of writing this post (June 2023), the below false information is still found online.

Bondi Sands website

I thought the best place to check was the brand’s website. I found a page that is meant to list all their vegan products, and the specific lotion I was going to order (value pump pack format) was on this page!

I then checked the ingredients, and couldn’t see anything that was not vegan. Unfortunately the ingredient list available online is incomplete and conveniently leaves “Beeswax” out.

The ingredient list on the product page (as of June 2023) is as follows: ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: HOMOSALATE 10.00% W/W, OCTOCRYLENE 8.00% W/W, OCTYL SALICYLATE 5.00% W/W, BUTYL METHOXYDIBENZOYLMETHANE 4.00% W/W. PRESERVATIVES: PHENOXYETHANOL, BENZYL ALCOHOL, HYDROXYACETOPHENONE

Other online retailers

It appears that other online retailers are also sharing an incomplete ingredient list, most likely what was communicated to them by Bondi Sands. This is the case for Sephora UK.

I even saw on Amazon that one of the SPF lotions I bought has “ Vegan” in the title!

All of the above is what I see online as of June 14th 2023. I do hope they’ll correct the misleading info!

What are the best vegan alternatives to Bondi Sands sunscreen?

Unfortunately Bondi Sands cannot be trusted when it comes to the vegan status of their products.

Until they clarify their communications, remove non-vegan products from their vegan page and provide complete ingredient list, I’d highly recommend choosing sunscreen from other brands.

Here are my 5 top picks, that are actually vegan!
