How to Set Fitness Goals AND CRUSH THEM

This way to approach goals works for everyone, whether you’re just starting your fitness journey or have been living this lifestyle for a while. At any point in our fitness journey we need to set new goals and intentions to keep us going.

Set a Long Term Goal

This is what you want to achieve in a year, or two, or three. Your big goal can be performance, health, lifestyle or aesthetic related. For instance: “I will lose 20 pounds in a year” or “I will make a long-term habit of working out 3 times a week” or even “I will run a marathon next year”.

Break it Down into Medium and Short Term Goals

Identify what you need to do in order to achieve your long-term goal. These steps will be your medium term (quarterly) and short term (monthly or weekly) goals. If you want to lose weight, your goals for the first quarter could be be to do 10k steps at least 5 days a week and to stop eating fast food every week.

The SMART Method

The key to achieving your medium and short term goals (and ultimately your long term goal) is to follow the SMART technique.

Make sure your quarterly, monthly and weekly goals are:

Specific. If you have a vague objective in mind you won’t really know what you’re thriving for.

Measurable. You should be able to evaluate it. X pounds to lose, X gym sessions a week, X miles run….

Agreed upon. If someone else sets goals for you, make sure you’re on the same page.

Realistic. There’s a fine line between ambitious and unrealistic goals. Challenge yourself but be conscious of what you can achieve.

Time-bound. This is where the quarterly, monthly and weekly break-down comes into play.

Keep Yourself Accountable

Write everything down so that you can keep track of your progress, keep your goals in mind and most importantly tick them off as you go!

Now it’s time to go after these goals and make yourself proud!
